Lima was part of the largest pre-Columbian empire in South America: the Incas, later capital of the Spanish Empire whose territory stretched from Panama to southern Chile, considered the second driest city in the world after the city of Cairo (Egypt). Today it is the political, cultural, financial and commercial center of Peru. Internationally, the city of Lima ranks fifth among the most populous cities in Latin America and is one of the thirty most populous urban agglomerations in the world.
