Pachacamac PreInca City-Shrine
Pachacamac is an ancient archaeological complex located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Lima. It was one of the most important religious centers of pre-Columbian times and is known for its impressive architecture and historical importance. This tour offers an incredible opportunity to explore the rich heritage of ancient Andean civilizations.
Pachacamac was inhabited by several pre-Inca cultures, including the Lima, Wari and Ichma civilizations. The site reached its peak during the Inca Empire, becoming an important religious and pilgrimage center. It occupies an area of about 600 hectares, nestled in the valley of the Lurin River and the Peruvian coastal desert. Its strategic location allowed it to dominate the trade routes that connected the coastal and highland regions. Its history is noted in chronicles of the conquistadors and in ethnohistoric documents. Temples, plazas, offerings, its cemetery and roads constitute an excellent repository of the memory of the Andean world and has an impressive view of the Pacific Ocean.
The translation of Pachacamac would be Pacha: Earth, Cosmos, Universe and Camac: Order, Laws, so it would be translated as natural laws that govern or order the cosmos.
We will visit numerous buildings, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Painted Temple and the Acllawasi or “Temple of the Chosen Women”. These structures exhibit intricate stone masonry and architectural techniques employed by ancient civilizations.
Many artifacts, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork and carved wooden objects, are visible as a result of the excavations, which help us to learn about the religious practices, way of life, spiritual knowledge and cultural manifestations of the ancient Andean cultures. Numerous burials and offerings have also been found.
