Lima, the city with a fascinating history, charming gastronomy and ancient tradition
The city of Lima (whose origin of the Quechua Limaq) is located on the central coast of Peru, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, flanked by the coastal desert and extending over the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers. The Spanish foundation was given on January 18, 1535 with the name “The City of the Kings” in the agricultural region known by the indigenous people as Limaq. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and the largest and most important city in South America during the regime of the Spanish empire.
This tour starts in the modern district of Miraflores, known as the tourist center of Lima, a district that has everything from shopping centers, beautiful parks, hotels with all the comforts and many restaurants just around the corner, it is also the main gateway to the Peruvian capital. Panoramic view from the outside to the “Huaca Pucllana” archaeological center, a ceremonial building of the “Lima” civilization, built entirely with small clay bricks known as “adobitos”, it is almost 2 thousand years old. Visit to the residential district of San Isidro, we will pass through the famous “Parque del Olivar”, a forest with more than 1500 olive trees, they are considered the oldest in the American continent, most of the embassies are in this district and the financial center of Lima.
Afterwards, a pleasant walk in the Historic Center of Lima, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991, You will see the buildings of the colonial (16th to 19th centuries) and republican period when Peru gained its independence since 1821: Boulevard de los Héroes Navales, Justice Palace, Rímac Building, Plaza San Martín and Jiron de la Union Street (these two places were the favorite ones for the locals to hang out), Bolivar Hotel, Lady of Mercy Church, First’s Peru Bank.
Visit included to the Convent Museum of San Francisco considered a jewel of colonial art, it has an impressive library with books dating from the 15th century, the choir stalls and its magnificent craftmanship, a cloister with colonial tiles imported from Sevilla and its main attraction: the famous “Catacombs”.
Then you will be taken to the Main Square of Lima, there are beautiful buildings with a big historical significance around it, such as: Basilica Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop’s Palace, Government Palace (before known as Pizarro’s Palace), Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and the Club de la Union. Every day at 11:30 am there is the “Changing of the Guard Ceremony” in the Main Courtyard of the Presidential Palace.
