Gold Museum

The Unique History Different From the Rest of the World

The development of metallurgy in the New World occurred completely independently from the Old World. In the Andes, the first evidence of metalworking dates from 1500 BC, with the discovery of sheets of native gold at the burial site of Waywaka in Andahuaylas in the southern highlands of Peru. As a comparison, let us remember that the first evidence of metallurgy in Mesoamerica (México) dates from 600 AD, and its introduction was influenced by the technologies developed by South American cultures (Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru).

This museum preserves one of the best collections of gold, silver and bronze artifacts from various pre-Inca civilizations including jewelry, ceremonial objects and funerary offerings, discover how each society uniquely expressed their beliefs and lifestyles through their gold objects. . We will visit the District of Barranco, the neighborhood that was the summer resort of the Lima elite at the beginning of the 20th century, its beautiful mansions of different styles, its art galleries and mural paintings by local artists.
